Cute little marshmallows

this makes me so fucking happy

Wait. Is that big marshmallow licking that little marshmallow?

Is it a cannibal?

I think it’s the marshmallow’s mom and it’s trying to comfort the little marshmallow

Maybe it’s a habit specific to the marshmallow species

oh god nooooooooooooo

I can’t believe that this is stop-motion.

I CAN’T UNDERSTAND FUCKING STOP-MOTION THOSE FINGERS SHOULD FALL RIGHT OFF BUT NO THEY SUPPORT THEMSELVES BEAUTIFULLY
WHAT THE ACTUALLY FUCK STOP MOTION

The fingers are being supported by armature wire. Virtually all stop motion puppets have some variety of this going on underneath it:
Given  the proportions of Burton’s creations, the armatures underneath his puppets are probably custom-made.
What you’re also looking at is a ton of replacement animation on that teddy bear. Instead of actually tearing open the bear model, someone, or a few people, carefully crafted a handful of that specific bear at various stages of being cut open. If you look closely, the slab it’s on moves slightly, which gives itself away.
Also, Jack’s speaking is done through replacement animation.

Stop motion utterly fascinates me.

GOD BLESS YOU

THIS IS THE THING I DONT GET ABOUT STOP MOTION
YOU HAVE TO PHYSICALLY MOVE THE DOLLS WITH UR HANDS AND REPLACE THEIR FACES //HOW DO YOU KEEP THEM IN THE SAME SPOT??????//

stop motion people are crazy

Thank you for including Paranorman because I feel the urge to remind you that in this day and age they still use mostly stop motion and have even managed to sharpen the skill to eliminate minimal errors that before were impossible to fix (aka jitter, hair movement dynamics, movement fluidity) by mixing 3D printing and other modern techniques along with the traditional stop motion process. Laika doesn’t fuck around.

animation is magic, isn’t it! ;)

Song of the Sea Teaser.

Song of the Sea is directed by Tomm Moore, who also directed The Secret of Kells (2009). With Song of the Sea he seems to be going for a traditional Irish theme, set in mythology and filled with nostalgia. In an interview with ScreenDaily he said, “

I wanted to capture the old Ireland before the whole Celtic Tiger thing started… it’s actually set in 1987. I always describe the film as a melancholy, musical comedy… the melancholy part is that little bit of nostalgia.

The visuals and music in this teaser are stunning. It’s oozing with inspiration and beauty. The Secret of Kells was also a beautiful story of imagery and symbolism, and I still go back to that one fondly from time to time. I can’t wait to see this new one.

Here’s the synopsis of Song of the Sea:

Song of the Sea tells the story of Ben and his little sister Saoirse — the last Seal-child — who embark on a fantastic journey across a fading world of ancient legend and magic in an attempt to return to their home by the sea. The film takes inspiration from the mythological Selkies of Irish folklore, who live as seals in the sea but become humans on land.

Song of the Sea is set to release in the second half of 2014. The film is a collaboration between several European studios, according to ScreenDaily:

The $7.5m (€5.6m) film is a five-way co-production between Moore’s Kilkenny-based Cartoon Saloon, Belgian The Big Farm, Luxembourg’s Melusine Productions, Paris-based Superprod and Danish Norlum.
